How to test a number of coaxial cables in my basement, which originate in different rooms of the house?
The local cable provider came in and used what he calls a toner to distinguish cable from the particular room we wanted. Now we would like to change the room where our computer (Hence modem). My question is to be more specific, therefore, does anyone know how to do this check for yourself? or heard of someone the "toner"?
you can do the trick of the battery, unless you have something connected to the other end of an unknown cable and the voltage on the wire can destroy something that was not supposed too. There are testing devices called "Fox and the Hound" or "toner and bananas." You can buy them in large box hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's, also Graybar Electric, ebay, www.parts-express.com, etc www.dalco.com Toner is a noise generator broadband the "banana" is a tone detector, called a banana because that used by Bell Telephone resembles a banana. You clip the toner into the unknown cable with banana, you can hear the noise generator without having to connect to the cable. There are a couple nice combos toner, the big dog is by Harris / Dracon, a good copy is made by Ideal.
