How do I backup data on a network crossover cable in Vista?

Basically, I have a crossover cable, a computer running Vista, and a laptop with Vista. What do I have to be able to make the Internet and two computers together using a crossover network, and transfer of all data through computer for backup, so I can format the laptop and then do the reverse and put the data back into the laptop. Oh and I am an advanced user, so it can be as technicians who need to be! Cheers.

It is basically the same as the guidance of XP in the list souce. So things are in different places, that's all.
