DVR recording in low quality, some reason for this?

I've had my Scientific Atlanta DVR (model is the Explorer 8300HD) for a little over a year. Recently everytime I can record a program, I see the image quality is terrible. It seems like a low resolution recording. The image appears very pixelated. When I'm watching live TV, rewind and stop me or the program, as it happens. I do not understand.
