Why did Sony make such a limited amount of PS3 to the point?

If you ask me, they released their defective product only to say that out before the Nintendo Wii. They knew their system was garbage (come on, overheating and fire? No compatibility with PS2 games as promised?), But Sony wanted to be all hip and new with your web browser and blu-ray player and whatever.
