Do I need HDMI cables to connect surround sound and HD DVD player to my HDTV?

You only have one HDMI input and I have a HD DVD player that has only an HDMI signal output. I planned to connect them. The HD DVD player has Dolby True HD and DDplus. However, I really want to buy a surround sound, but do not know anything about it or cables. Is there a way to have an HDMI cable connected to a surround sound system even though it only has one output to be used for the player? Is it necessary? Any advice on what to do and how to use cables to connect everything up would be greatly appreciated.
that's what I would do. I would find a receiver that has multiple inputs and one output for many components could connect HDMI to the receiver, then connect the receiver to the TV.
