Should I upgrade to digital television, even in my isolated location?

With all the public relations around February 2009 and the move to television digital, I'm seriously considering dropping my CATV converter box for digital signal. Live "so far in the ass of the world," I can hardly get my local channels when I use my VHF antenna, so I subscribe to cable television. (This question is for the techie-type people.) For digital signals to reach across and within landscapes (mountains and valleys) better than its predecessor, the VHF signals?
