Cable Compression
Is-la-HDTV signal in the air better than cable or satellite?

I was listening to a radio consumer advocate popular. He said you actually get a better picture using an antenna for your HDTV vs cable or satellite. The reason given was that the cable and satellite have to compress the signal, but free in the air does not. In the computer world, there is lossy compression like JPEG, where you lose some clarity. Then there's post where lose any data and get a perfect reproduction. So I guess we are your 3 questions: 1. It's a-la-compressed air signal more or not? 2. Keep cord Cells and companies use a "loss" compression scheme for HDTV signals. 3. Is it true that the picture of HDTV is higher if has received over the air transmission. For Pancakes – HDTV has 1080i and 720p resolutions, both higher than the progressive DVD is 480p.

The ATSC standard for HDTV transmission is MPEG-2 compression and data rate 19mbit. OTA and cable both use MPEG-2, like most of the satellite transmission. Some Recent satellite local stations are compressed with MPEG-4. All HDTV is compressed. However, the MPEG allow different amounts compression and different qualities. When OTA uses the bandwidth of one channel of HDTV in a single 19mbs, you get the best quality obtainable HDTV. However, many OTA stations emit several programs in sub-channels simultaneously with its high definition channel. Stealing bandwidth and bit rate its high-definition channel, and if that is too much, the HD picture quality will suffer (the subchannels are usually not high definition.) So we can not group all the OTA in a category of image quality. The same is true for cable channels, have the option to retransmit the broadcast signal accurate, in which case the cable have the same quality as the broadcast. However, some cable systems will decompress and recompress the signal so they can use a lower bitrate and less bandwidth. If they do, picture the cable will be poorer than the OTA. It is also possible that the cable to receive a higher quality signal to the station (unless strongly compressed) networks used to distribute their content in high definition. If the cable system that compresses the signal to a high bit rate, but the organism limited broadcast bandwidth, the cable signal would be better. I do not know if this latter approach is being used by any of the cable companies in this time, but is a possibility. Finally, satellite compression is usually more severe than OTA or cable, and my experience with high definition satellite is that for large networks is not as good as OTA or cable. However, special HD channels on satellite (HDNet, Discovery HD) are excellent. In short, the answer to our question is: it depends. Finally, all MPEG compression schemes are "losses." It would be impossible to obtain the high definition image the allocated bandwidth with lossless compression. But the degree of "loss" is flexible and up to the party making the enccoding.
